How to Maintain Your Reusable Injector Pen

Why Maintenance Matters for Accuracy

A reusable injector pen is a precision mechanical instrument. Unlike a disposable syringe, it uses a mechanical drive mechanism to deliver exact units of fluid. Keeping this mechanism clean and functional is vital to ensuring your research dosage remains accurate over time.

The Golden Rule: Remove the Needle

The most common mistake researchers make is leaving the needle tip attached to the pen between uses. Always unscrew and discard the needle immediately after use.

The Air Bubble Problem:

  • Leaving the needle on creates an open airway. Changes in room temperature can cause the liquid inside to expand or contract, pulling air into the cartridge. These air bubbles can throw off your measurement accuracy.

The Leakage Risk:

  • Conversely, temperature changes can force liquid out of the needle, leading to wasted product and crystallization on the needle tip, which can block the flow.

Cleaning Your Pen Device

Your pen body does not need to be sterilized, but it must be kept clean.

  1. Exterior: Wipe the outside of the pen with a damp cloth or an alcohol prep pad.
  2. Cartridge Holder: If you spill liquid inside the cartridge holder, clean it immediately with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.
  3. Do Not Soak: Never submerge the mechanical body of the pen in water, as this can damage the internal spring mechanism.

Proper Storage Temperatures

  • Without Cartridge: Store the pen body at room temperature in its case, away from dust and direct sunlight.
  • With Cartridge Loaded: If your research protocol requires the compound to be refrigerated (standard for reconstituted peptides), you can store the entire pen in the fridge. However, allow it to sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before use to prevent mechanical stiffness.

When to Replace Your Pen Body

High-quality reusable pens are durable, but not immortal. If you notice the dosage dial clicking inconsistently, or the plunger feeling “gritty” when depressed, it is time to replace the unit to ensure safety and precision.
